Miss PE 2010 attracts record number

WHEN the clock struck noon yesterday, The Herald Spec-Savers Miss Port Elizabeth 2010 competition had attracted a record 131 entries.

The bevy of hopefuls eyeing the largest haul of prizes in the competition’s history will know later this week if they have made it through to the next round.

The Herald offices will be a hive of activity tomorrow afternoon when the first round of judging sifts down this field to a semi-final pool of 50.

The judges will be looking not only at the photographs but also at how the entrants present themselves. With hobbies ranging from quad-biking to church work and roller-skating to swimming the Redhouse River Mile, it is clear the young women have voomah to spare.

Their ambitions are just as diverse, with many wanting to run their own business and help others. But there were also individualists who specifically wanted to “establish a media empire”, “start my own charity”, “be on the front page” and “make my granny proud”.

Participants hail from as far afield as King William’s Town and Queenstown. However, fewer than half of the faces on the entry forms dropped into The Herald marketing department in-tray will go on to meet the judges at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Centre on Friday.

The first in-person round of judging is on Friday at Squire’s when only 50 entrants meet a panel consisting of Bryan Dowley of Spec-Savers, Sicelo Fayo of The Herald, Gillian Roffe of Uniglobe Bay Travel, Tracy Weiss of Market Square Volkswagen and The Herald Greenacres Miss Port Elizabeth 2009 Di-Anne Qoto.

They will be looking for a combo of verve and curve – along with spark and heart – to take over the role that Di-Anne has played so graciously over the past year.

The judges will decide on their top 20 that same day and these stylish stunners will be invited to a cocktail party at 34° South on Monday evening, March 15.
